Tutor Requirements

Tutors Should Have:
~   A passion for reading and language as well as learning.
~   A capability to relate to adults from different backgrounds.
~   A HS diploma or equivalent and be at least 18 years old.
Tutors Need to Complete the Following:
~   A 1-2 hour orientation to give you insight into our organization.
~   Training sessions amounting to 12 hours.
~   Attendance to at least one workshop every year.
~   A commitment of at least 6 months.
~    A self-evaluation each year.

Evelyn Renner's 11 Reasons Tutors are Successful - Successful Tutors:
 
1. are consistent in attendance and effort.
2. use and apply program-approved techniques with students.
3. come prepared to the lesson.
4. provide the program with necessary reports.
5. attend required continuing education classes.
6. use student-centered materials and activities.
7. use process-driven approaches.
8. demonstrate patience.
9. remain sensitive to the student’s needs and interests.
10. foster independence.
11. work as a team.
Our next New Tutor Orientation sessions will be held Tuesday, May 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm OR Saturday, May 31 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library, 300 W. Aspen. Come learn more about what it means to be a Literacy Volunteer. You must attend an Orientation to attend New Tutor Training. The Orientation will give you some background on our organization as well as an idea of what tutoring is like. You only need attend one.
New Tutor Training sessions will be offered at our office, 715 N. Humphreys, on Tuesdays/Thursdays, June 3, 5, 10 and 12 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm OR Saturdays, June 7 and 14 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at LVCC (lunch on your own).
