Changing Lives Through Literacy

Frequently Asked Questions

What background do I need?

Anyone 18 years and older with a High School diploma or GED and the ability to read, write, and speak English well is all that's requited to become a tutor.

Who are the learners?

Our learners are adults who wish to develop basic skills in reading, writing, and conversational English. They come from all walks of life and many countries.

How do I become a tutor?

Our tutor training program is state-of-the-art. Our trainers use hands-on methods to train tutors for teaching conversational English and the basics of reading and writing English. Orientation and training sessions are held Fall, Winter and Spring.

How much time does it take?

Tutors and learners meet weekly or more frequently for 1-2 hours for six months or longer.

What are my responsibilities?

After training, tutors prepare and implement lesson plans each week for their learners. At the end of each month, tutors report their hours as well as the learner's progress to the office. The office staff is available to help during business hours.

Can I sponsor a learner?

LVCC's services reach over 150 adults each year. It costs about $500 to support one adult learner in our program for a year. This figure includes the cost of language assessment, tutor training, and general operational expenses. Your contribution at this level would make a significant difference in one learner's life.
